Flying Pan

"Flying Pan" - © Tony Mason / Oregon Photo Tours

  •   Image Title: “Flying Pan”
      ID Number: D 06216
  •   Camera: Olympus OM4
  •   Lens: 35-70mm 1:3.5-4.5 Auto-Zoom Zuiko @ 70mm
  •   Film: Fuji Fujichrome Sensia II 100 (RA)
  •   Exposure: 2 seconds @ f/22
  •   Accessories: Tiffen Warm Polarizing Filter
  •   Location: 5th Street Park - Coquille, Oregon
  •   Shooting Technique: This image was shot for our camera club's (OCPA) scavenger hunt (the topic was “pan”) on an overcast, slightly drizzling day. I placed my tripod-attached camera on a local city park playground’s merry-go-round (near the outside edge) and then I set up another tripod in the center of the merry-go-round with a frying pan attached to it. With the soft, overcast light, ISO 100 film, small aperture (f/22) and a warm polarizing filter, the shutter speed was necessarily slow (2 seconds). I estimated how fast I should spin the merry-go-round and what the background would look like with the camera tilted to the right to place the subject on a diagonal line. Because of the nature of the scavenger hunt, I could not “waste” film on exposure bracketing or different techniques so only one frame was exposed to get this shot.
  •   Printing: Slide was scanned using a Polaroid SprintScan 4000 as a 4000 dpi .tif file. The file was then imported into Adobe Photoshop 6.01 and minor adjustments made to have the final print match the original transparency. It was then printed onto Epson Glossy Photo Paper using the Epson Stylus Photo 1270. The print was then submitted to Shuttebug Magazine.
  •   Published Image: This image was chosen (along with 9 others) for the "Picture This! - Reader's Page" in the August 2003 edition of Shutterbug Magazine (page 10). The theme for this month was "Pan It!"
